About Jake
Sports therapist in Sheffield. Level 3 Sports Massage Therapist, currently completing a Movement Therapy diploma. And someone who knows exactly what it is like to be on the other side of the treatment table.
My hip taught me most of what matters
For a long time I had hip pain that would not leave me alone. It nagged on the bike. It nagged off the bike.
And like most active people, I did what we all do. I stretched it. I rested it. I trained around it. I told myself it would settle.
It did not settle.
Eventually I was diagnosed with cam impingement, a shape difference in the hip joint, along with a labral tear. I had surgery, then a long stretch of rehab. It took me from carefully relearning basic movement all the way back to riding sportives again.
That whole process is the single biggest influence on how I work now. The uncertainty before the diagnosis. The fear of making it worse. The slow work of rebuilding strength, and rebuilding trust in my own body.
I know what it feels like when nobody has properly explained what is going on. And I know how much changes the moment somebody does.
So now, the first thing I do with anyone who comes in is take the time to understand what is actually going on. Not to rush you into a plan. To work out what is sensitive, what you can tolerate, and what the best next step really is.
Being active and being in the dark about your own body is a horrible place to be. I have been there. And getting out of it starts with someone finally taking the time to explain it properly.
How I work
Everything at Jake Harrison Therapies starts with understanding the person, not just the sore bit. What you do, what you are training for, what your body has been through and what you want back.
From there it is assessment led and evidence informed. We work out what is sensitive and what might be contributing to it, use hands on treatment where it genuinely helps, and build strength, capacity and confidence back in at a pace that suits you.
What you will not get here is fear, dependence or drama. No being told your spine is out of place, no treatment plans that quietly never end, and no pretending a massage can do a rehab plan's job.
